Suicide Prevention in Primary Care: Who's at Risk & How to Intervene

Join us for an important educational program on Wednesday, October 22, at the Jacobs School of Medicine. The Medical Society of the County of Erie, in collaboration with the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Erie County, Crisis Services, and the Buffalo VA Medical Center, is hosting this educational opportunity focused on suicide prevention in primary care settings. 

The program will feature presentations from Celia Spacone, PhD, Coordinator of the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Erie County; LaTonya Credle of Value Network WNY; Deanna Schaumloffel of Crisis Services; and Ryan Belka from the NYS Attorney General's office. 

Registration for the event will begin at 5:30 PM with dinner being served from 5:30 to 6:25 PM. The educational program will begin at 6:30 PM and will focus on the following learning objective. 

  • Apply a structured triage tool to help professionals and paraprofessionals make informed decisions during crisis situations and advance the national framework of Call, Response and Go!
  • Learn at-risk groups and how to work past stigma to engage them in treatment
  • Learn the importance of means reduction in suicide prevention and how to apply this in your clinical practice
  • Explore crisis intervention levels and available community resources to better understand how triage tools support effective crisis response 
  • Increase efficiency in identifying and connecting individuals with the appropriate level of care during their time of crisis 
  • Understand Extreme Risk Protection Orders including the parameters of Net York State's ERPO Law and its impact on suicide prevention and rates

This is a free, in person program with dinner provided. There will be excellent opportunities to interact and network with our vendors including the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Erie County, Crisis Services, Upstate New York Poison Control, the Buffalo VA Medical Center, and MLMIC Insurance. This program offers an outstanding opportunity to enhance your knowledge of suicide prevention strategies while connecting with colleagues and community partners committee to improving mental health care.
