The Medical Society of the County of Erie is deeply connected to both the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) and the American Medical Association (AMA), creating a unified advocacy structure from the local community to the national stage. Together, we harness the strength of our dynamic local physician community and, where needed, join forces at the state and national levels to advance policies that protect patient care and the practice of medicine.
At the state level, MSCE physicians serve in leadership roles within MSSNY, including on the Board, Council, and a wide range of committees. They also serve as delegates and alternates to the MSSNY House of Delegates, where they help shape statewide policy on reimbursement, regulation, public health, scope of practice, and physician wellness. Through MSSNY, Erie County physicians are also connected to the AMA, where our delegates participate in national policymaking that influences federal legislation, regulation, and clinical practice standards.
District 8 (Western New York) and Erie County work together each year to ensure a strong, well-prepared presence at the MSSNY House of Delegates. Erie County and District 8 physicians draft, submit, and debate resolutions that address real-world challenges facing Western New York practices—issues such as access to care, payment reform, prior authorization, administrative burden, public health threats, and emerging clinical concerns. Many of these resolutions move forward to inform MSSNY policy and, through MSSNY and AMA channels, can ultimately influence nationwide healthcare policy.
Committee service is a key way physicians engage in this work, and opportunities are broad. MSSNY committees span areas such as legislative and advocacy work; socioeconomic issues and physician payment; health information technology and digital health; public health and preventive medicine; quality and patient safety; ethics; membership, young physicians, residents, fellows, and medical students; women physicians and DEI; and continuing medical education and physician wellness. Through active involvement in these committees and delegations, MSCE members ensure that the perspectives of Western New York physicians—and the needs of our patients—are represented at every level of organized medicine.
